About the shot - 2

September 11, 2001. I was in Watertown, South Dakota shooting portraits on the local high school for a story on American High Schools. Watching television while eating breakfast I saw the attack on the twin towers and pentagon. My first reaction was that I had to go to New York, but I soon realized it would take too long, all airtraffic was immediately banned in US airspace and driving from SD to the Big Apple would take days.
I decided to head to Watertown High and keep on with the story I was shooting there. The mood in the school that day was quiet but not so different from any other day. One difference was that every TV in school was on, showing images from ground zero.
One of the students I took a portrait of that day was Josh, a senior dressed in black with an appropriate t-shirt for that day.

Moment

Being one of the founders of Moment Agency, leaving the group after 7 years was a big step for me, but it was just time to move on towards something new. It is with great pleasure I see the progress of this agency, now run by my friend and collegue Chris Maluszynski. The Agency now consists of the "old" guys, Chris Maluszynski, Elin Berge, Joakim Roos and Pieter ten Hoopen and they just been joined by Johan Bävman, Andrea Gjestvang, Thomas Lekfeldt, Eivind H Natvig, Åsa Sjöström and Knut Egil Wang. All great photographers, who I'm sure will keep this agency in the forefront of European photojournalism.

About the shot - 1

May 2002. Working on a news story covering the famine in rural Angola following the end of the civil war. I came across this scene in the small town of Camacupa. Every day aid seekers came walking, often very long distances, to help centers set up by various ngo's. The MSF used this rice packing warehouse, empty due to the lack of food, as a therapeutic feeding center. Outside the building an old tree casts it shadows on the wall as a mother with two children arrives at the help center.
